about

CG Summerlin is a part-time electric guitarist, born in Peterborough and residing in Nottingham.

He is currently 1/6th of the Hey Colossus group and part of the Haress collective of musicians based in the hills of Shropshire. Over the last 25+ years he has also been part of Kogumaza, Wolves Of Greece, Lords, Grey Hairs, Reynolds and Felix and has previously made solo music under the name Last Of The Real Hardmen.

“Easter” is the first solo release under his own name and is a collection of guitar improvisations released on cassette by Wrong Speed.

“Easter weekend 2018 it seemed like everyone I would normally hang out with had better things to do. As the long weekend approached I was getting fearful that I would be spending it on my own at home with nothing to fill my time. I’m not good at having nothing to do.

So, I invented a fictitious situation where I was making an album and I put some rules in place to do it. I decided I wanted to improvise guitar in a way that didn't rely on noise or texture too much, but instead was about trying to make the most direct link between me and the instrument and to not be afraid of being melodic, minimal or simple. I wanted to try to see the guitar as I did when I first started playing in 1994 and recreate that joy and surprise that you feel when you discover things. It felt like a slightly daunting challenge but a good way to spend a couple of days.

I set up 2 small amps and my tape echo machine, took a pile of guitars and locked myself in the practice room. I recorded it live on a 20-year-old digital multitracker with 4 cheap microphones. I didn't really check levels or even listen back to what I had done, I just wanted to play and not get paralysed by choices. The gear wasn't in the best condition but I decided to make the buzz and hum and broken cables a part of it (whatever "it" was).

I never meant it to be released as an album but I sent it to a couple of friends who were very kind about it and encouraged me to think about mixing it down properly and making it a “proper” release. I eventually sent it to my Colossus bandmate Joe at Wrong Speed – who released my first solo music, a lathe-cut 10” on his Lone Hand label around 20 years ago – and he kindly said he would put it out on the label, which feels like a nice piece of circle-completion.

I hope you like it.”

“Easter” is available on cassette, limited to 77 copies. It comes in a full-colour printed cassette and riso-printed sleeve all lovingly designed by David Hand.
